An old baker’s oven, previously adjacent to a farm in the centre of the village, was handed over to the village council several years ago. The oven is found inside a stone building with a traditional flat tile roof, two doors (one on the front and another to the rear opening onto the Rue des Tanneurs) and two windows.
The entrance to the oven itself is surrounded by dressed stone. The vault in the cooking chamber is in excellent condition as is the bottom of the oven. The hood is supported by two corbels. One of these corbels is sculpted and goes up to the chimney.
The building has already undergone two phases of restoration work, as part of operations organised by the Ecomusée de Sainte Gauburge. A section of the attic floor was renovated traditionally and drainage was created to protect the foundations. The village council has now decided to redo the roof, ceiling and joinery.
The baker’s oven is used several times a year to bake bread, biscuits and other specialities, for example during the Pierres en Lumières event, the Tout Feu Tout Flamme festival and during the village fête.
Verrières village council has renovated the baker’s oven.
Verrières Patrimoine and Crédit Agricole bank contributed funds.
